Resources & Support for undocumented students & families
A safe and inclusive school community that empowers everyone to thrive.
Purdue Polytechnic High Schools is committed to providing a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for all students and families, regardless of immigration status. We recognize that recent changes in federal policies may have caused uncertainty and concern, and we want to assure our community that we stand with you and remain dedicated to safeguarding your rights and welfare.
Our Commitment to Fostering a Safety and Nurturing a Community of Belonging
Purdue Polytechnic High Schools (PPHS) has a proud tradition of embracing individuals from all identities and backgrounds, ensuring everyone has a voice in our school community.
With that in mind, it is imperative that we offer support during this time of uncertainty. We have policies in place to protect the privacy and security of our students and staff:
Protection Against Unlawful Searches and Seizures: PPHS will not permit any enforcement actions by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on school grounds without proper legal documentation.
Access to Trained Staff: Our team has been trained to respond appropriately to situations involving undocumented students and their families.
KNOW Your RIGHTS!
It is essential for students and families to understand their rights. Here are key points to keep in mind:
Your Privacy Matters: Purdue Polytechnic High Schools does not ask about or disclose immigration status. We are committed to protecting the privacy of all students and their families, as required by federal and state law.
Access to Education: Every child has the right to attend public school regardless of immigration status under federal law (Plyler v. Doe).
Documents Required for Entry: ICE officers must present a valid warrant signed by a judge to enter school grounds. Members of the PPHS staff are trained to verify the validity of such documents.
For more detailed information, please refer to the National Immigration Law Center’s “Know Your Rights” resources.
Frequently asked questions
-
ICE agents cannot enter without a judicial warrant. PPHS staff are trained to handle such situations appropriately.
-
PPHS strictly adheres to privacy laws, including FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act), which safeguards student records.
-
Stay calm and do not resist or obstruct the agents or officers. Avoid lying or providing false documents. Prepare an emergency plan for yourself and your family in case you are arrested.
Memorize the phone numbers of your family members and lawyer. If you have children or require medication, make arrangements to ensure their care.
-
Your rights:
You have the right to remain silent. If you wish to exercise that right, say so out loud. (In some states, you may be required to provide your name if asked.)
You do not have to consent to a search of yourself or your belongings, but police may pat down your clothing if they suspect a weapon.
If arrested by the policy, you have the right to a government-appointed lawyer.
If detained by ICE, you have the right to consult with a lawyer, but the government is not required to provide one. You can ask for a list of free or low-cost alternatives.
You do not have to answer questions about where you were born, whether you are a U.S. citizen, or how you entered the country. (Different rules apply at international borders, airports, and for individuals on certain vias.)
