Purdue Polytechnic High School Launches Transformative Healthy School Lunch program with the support of Mayor Hogsett and Key Partners

Indianapolis, IN – August 2024. On August 14, 2024, Purdue Polytechnic High School (PPHS) Schweitzer Center at Englewood hosted a pivotal back-to-school press conference led by Judith B. Thomas, Deputy Mayor of Neighborhood Engagement for the City of Indianapolis. The event, which featured city officials, community partners, and educational leaders, focused on the Conscious Cafeteria Project, an innovative initiative to improve school lunch programs across Indianapolis.

At PPHS, access to nutritious meals is fundamental to student success. The Conscious Cafeteria Project is a shining example of how our city is coming together to make a real difference in students' lives. We deeply thank the Mayor’s office for their leadership and unwavering support in championing this initiative.

The Conscious Cafeteria Project, led by the local, woman-owned business Ahimsa, founded by Riley pediatrician Dr. Manasa Mantravadi, is at the heart of our efforts to improve school lunch programs. Ahimsa's vision and dedication have driven the transition from single-use plastic to reusable steel food ware, promoting both health and sustainability in our schools. This shift not only reduces environmental impact but also aligns with health recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics, which cautions against the use of plastic due to its harmful effects on children's health. The generous financial support of Cummins has been instrumental in bringing this vision to life, further showcasing the power of collaboration between businesses and educational institutions.

Judith Thomas, Deputy Mayor of Neighborhood Engagement for the City of Indianapolis, underscored the significance of the project, stating, "The Conscious Cafeteria Project is a critical step in ensuring our students have access to nutritious meals and safe materials that not only support their health but also contribute to a more sustainable environment. The collaboration between our schools, local organizations, and businesses exemplifies the power of community in driving positive change."

Dr. Keeanna Warren, CEO of Purdue Polytechnic High Schools (PPHS), emphasized the impact of the initiative on students' academic success. She stated, "When we ensure that every student has access to nutritious meals, we directly support their ability to learn and achieve academically."

In addition to PPHS – Englewood, other schools participating in the Conscious Cafeteria Project include Purdue Polytechnic High School – Broad Ripple, Indiana Math & Science Academy West, Victory College Prep, and Bethel Park Elementary. These schools are united in their commitment to fostering a healthier and more sustainable environment for students.

The event also highlighted Cummins's support, whose contributions—both financial and hands-on—have been instrumental in advancing the project. Additionally, Martha Hoover from the Patachou Foundation spoke about the Pataschool initiative, which focuses on scratch cooking in school cafeterias to enhance the quality of meals for students.
